If you want your timber to last you a lifetime then you need to save them by applying a varnish. We use quality brands and can offer you a choice of products. The brands we use are Cabot’s, Wattyl or Intergrain and our services also extend to removing transparent coatings and stains.
Previously painted wood may be stripped away from the timber using Citri Strip, which is a chemical that extracts stains and varnishes. This method does not harm the timber.
Once the wood is drained of the paint and varnish, the timber requires to be washed with Deckswood, or Cabot’s Woodclean which is a bleaching agent. It is cleaned out by means of a high-pressure washer, then dried properly afterwards before being dyed again.
Sanding between coats of varnish is important as it will enable the second coat to adhere to more easily.
If the existing varnish is in good condition you may be able to apply straight over it however sanding it prior will help you achieve better results.
This all depends on whether the varnish is oil based or water based. Typically a water based varnish will dry within 72 hours and an oil based varnish dries in 24 hrs. Best results are achieved by ensuring that the first coat has dried completely.
One coat of primer is the recommended amount however you may need to apply 2 coats if you are wanting to cover dark stains.
Applying varnish with a brush requires some skill. Mi Painting are experienced and will leave our floors lookin streak free. A useful tip is holding the brush at a right angle and working towards the grain of the timber.
You can paint over varnish using a water based acrylic paint. If you’re using an oil based primer then you must use an oil based paint.
You can use a sponge for small areas but best practice is to use a bristle brush for an even finish.
MI Painting will evaluate the condition of your floors and doall the necessary preparation such as removing old paint or varnish from the floors. They will sand, prime and apply the varnish with precision so that your floors look like new.
